Las Vegas Farmer's Markets

Great Places to Buy and Sell Locally

Nothing make one feel part of a community like a good farmer's market. The products are local, the profits are earned by locals and usually the bang for ones buck is superior to big box stores and supermarkets. Here in Las Vegas we are blessed with a number of great farmer's markets, most that run all year round.

In a fabulous article on Farmer's Market Tips posted recently by my About.com peer Molly Watson who does great work as the Guide to Local Foods, you can read up on the habits of frequent farmer's market shoppers.

Once you're ready to shop head to these farmer's markets that can be found all across the Las Vegas Valley.

1. Las Vegas Farmer's Market

This market has been a Summerlin staple since 1999 when founders Ginger and Stephen Johnson set up a few booths. 200 people bought goods from nine booths that day and more than a decade later the weekly total has topped 5,000 people and 25 booths.

With three locations serving the Northwest corner of the Las Vegas Valley, running Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday there are ample opportunities to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables from across the Southwest United States. For sale most weeks are a variety of great produce including blood oranges and many varieties of citrus, asparagus, beets, leaf greens, nuts, pasta, salad mix, fresh cut flowers, bedding plants, avocados, squash, pomelos, bok choy, strawberries and more including authentic hand crafted European style breads and cakes as well as local fresh breads and pastries. Arts and crafts also have a heavy presence at the markets.

2. Fresh 52 Farmer's Market

If you like your farmer's markets with a bit more zing then Fresh 52 Farmer's Market should be your Saturday and Sunday destination. Open 52 weekends a year (hence the name) Fresh 52 is a truly pan-Vegas farmer's market. The Saturday market settles in weekly at Tivoli Village in the Summerlin area, while Sunday's market takes place at Sansone Park Place east of Henderson in South Las Vegas. Wherever you are in the valley, the trip is worth it.

Fresh 52 Farmer's Market strives to be more than just your standard strip of booths. These markets are part art festival, part community event and part shopping mecca. Head to Bistro Blends for great sauces and glazes, Dawg Daze for great home made breads and grab a shaved ice from Sno Ono to cool of from the hot Las Vegas heat. Every weekend there's something new.

3. Country Fresh Frmer's Market

Not to be left out of the Farmer's Market game Henderson comes charging in with the Country Fresh Farmer's Market. This farmer's market boasts two days and tow locations, both in the heart of Henderson. Featuring dozens of vendors ranging the gamut from custom metal artwork, amazing and odd teas, Jazzy dog wear to numerous stalls selling produce and baked goods.

Stop by for some amazing fresh strawberries that'll make the store bought variety look like prunes, or scarf down a bunch of kettle corn which turns out is actually pretty healthy or better yet try some of Sugar's bakery decadent pastry. Come foten and you'll see just how far from the Strip you can get in Henderson.

Friday's Market

4. Sunflower Farmer's Market

While some of you sticklers out there will harp on me for including Sunflower Farmer's Market among my list of farmer's markets because it is a store and not a hastily assembled tent city on one of our many beloved Las Vegas parks, you need only step inside one of these amazing stores to see why I include it.

Fresh produce, organic food, tastily prepared meals and snacks, fine teas and coffees and interesting craft items. Sounds just like a farmer's market to me. Sure Sunflower has stores in many states in the West, but try leaving one of Las Vegas' two locations without something you've never eaten before.

5. Bet on the Farm

Master restaurateurs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich have taken their love of good food to a new place; the farmer's market. Originally begun as a one of event hosted by the Palazzo, this celebrity farmer's market now runs every Thursday.

This cash only market features amazing produce, including honey, pistachios, herbs, vegetable and fruit. It's origins may lie in celebrity and fame, but its home is firmly ground in the people of Las Vegas. Bet on the Farm prides itself on being local and sustainable. Vegas as a whole could learn a few things from this market.
