A Look at Henderson:

From , former About.com Guide

The City of Henderson spans 94 square miles and runs along the southeastern edge of the Las Vegas valley. With over 275,000 residents, it’s the second largest community in the state, second only to Las Vegas itself.

Over the years Henderson has been able to maintain a small-town atmosphere, with quiet neighborhoods and low crime, despite its close proximity to metropolitan Las Vegas. The city boasts over 37 miles of hiking and walking trails, and was named the sixth best walking city in America in 2007 by Prevention Magazine. It was also ranked the 20th best place to live by Money Magazine in 2006.

History:

Henderson celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003. It began as a township in the 1940s when it was tapped for its deposits of magnesium, a crucial element in the war effort. When it became incorporated in 1953 it had a modest 7,410 residents that called it home.

Getting Around:

The Citizens Area Transit, or CAT, provides bus services all over Henderson and Las Vegas. Taxi and limousine services are also just a phone call away.

Shopping:

Henderson shopping greatly benefits from its closeness to Las Vegas. The District at Green Valley ranch offers a wide variety of fashion retailers, including Coach, Anthropologie, New Balance and Gymboree. There’s even something for your four-legged family members at Flea Bag’s Barkery and Bow-tique.

When it gets too warm to think about shopping outside, The Galleria at Sunset is the only indoor mall in Henderson. The two-story mall has over 140 stores and 12 fast food restaurants.

Dining:

Some of the best places to find a meal in Henderson can be found at The District at Green Valley Ranch. Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ has the most tender ribs and sweetest iced tea I’ve ever had, and The Crazy Pita has a large variety of fresh and healthy Mediterranean cuisine. Both the Elephant Bar and Kennedy Tavern offer up libations and good food after a day of shopping.

And don’t forget dessert: You can’t go wrong with an Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream located right at the center of the shopping district.
