While not as steeped in fame as its north westerly cousin Summerlin, Henderson has become one of Las Vegas' most desirable neighborhoods.
"Born in America's Defense"
Officially incorporated in 1953 and named after prominent Nevada Senator Charles B. Henderson, the township of Henderson was founded some ten years earlier when magnesium the "miracle metal" of World War II was discovered in the area. A key ingredient in incendiary munition casings and airplane engines and frames, the discovery of magnesium in the Las Vegas Valley led to a massive influx of residents who worked at the Basic Magnesium Plant.
After the war ended, magnesium became less important and Henderson almost went the way of many a Western ghost town before it. An emergency visit by the Nevada Legislature secured Henderson's future and by 2006, the city ranked 20th in Money Magazine's annual poll of best places to live in the United States.
