Each summer the folks who run the Fremont Street Experience bring us Las Vegans one of the best Free events of the summer. For 100 days starting on May 19th and running all the way to Labor Day Weekend Fremont Street in Downtown is home to "Rock of Vegas." This years theme is90's alt rock groups. For those of us of a certain age, this author included, our college experience was dominated by the glum but rocking music of REM, Nirvana, The Cure and Soundgarden.

While most of us have matured, and out musical taste with it, there are few children of the 80's who don't have a bit of nostalgia for the days of grundge and flannel. So get those old mix CDs out of your trunk and use your car's CD player  (you still have one of those don't you?) and prep for Fremont Street Experience's Rock of Vegas weekends.

"This is the fourth summer concert series at Fremont Street Experience and this year Rock of Vegas will bring the classic rock hits of the '80s to life with plenty of power ballads and guitar shredding," said Jeff Victor, president of Fremont Street Experience. "Downtown Vegas is a fun place to see a concert and offers one of the best values in Las Vegas. All the concerts and stage shows are free, plus downtown hotel-casinos offer great deals on room rates, gambling and many food and drink specials." (Source: prnewswire.com)

Fremont Street Experience is one of my go to destinations, and as a Vegas local it is probably one of yours as well. If not, what the heck is wrong with you? It is home base for some of my favorite events, like First Fridays, one of my favorite bars, The Griffin, and home to the only place I've ever heard of where you can zipline underneath a giant multi-block television. There are always free concerts, amazing street vendors, numerous locals casinos and art galeries and great bars and restaurants. The Rock of Vegas Free Summer Concert Series only heightens the fun we locals can have Downtown, and if you are especially nice maybe you'll take your out of town family members and guests with you.
