About the Tim Allen the Man and the Show: People bandy about the phrase The American Dream in sappy daytime soaps, car commercials and blasé country songs without ever truly examining what the dream really is. Tim Allen, actor, comedian, voice over artist and "tool man" proves that despite a hefty wrong turn on the highway of life, The American Dream exists for those willing to work for it. With his occasional residency at the Venetian Showroom Tim Allen proves the American Dream is real.
While still in his mid twenties, Tim Allen found himself adrift. He’d found a love of drama and music, specializing in classical piano. He’d received a BS in communications, while beginning to find his comedic voice on WDIR, the college radio station of Western Michigan University. Yet something was missing, and this hole led to the episode that would define his life and nearly end a brilliant career before it started.
On October 2nd, 1978 Allen was arrested for the possession of 1.6 pounds of cocaine. This was an amount that could hold a life sentence. A plea deal and 28 months in prison gave Allen the time to make use of the philosophy minor he’d earned and when he was released the real Tool Man got his chance to wow the world.
And wow it Tim Allen has. Beginning his career in stand-up on a dare, he quickly gained notice on the Detroit comedy scene. From there the Tim Allen moved to Los Angeles and graced audiences with his quirky, blue-collar style of humor at The Comedy Store. It was here that the Tool Man was born.
When Hollywood came calling Allen was ready. Home Improvement, based on skits by Allen, would become one of the greatest sitcom success stories in history. Running from 1991-1999, Home Improvement followed the misadventures of Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor as seen through his professional life as a power tool TV show host and his home life as a husband and father of three.
Home Improvement would make Allen wealthy and the Tool Man famous and would lead him to the big screen of Hollywood blockbusters. The Santa Clause was his first hit and was one part of a triumvirate of success when in November of 1994 he simultaneously had the highest grossing film, #1 bestselling book and the highest rated television show.
His rise to fame was only beginning and perhaps his greatest role came in 1995 when he lent his voice talents to a character that would go on to be one of the most beloved in movie history.
As Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s groundbreaking masterpiece Toy Story, Allen helped create a character whose catch phrase “To Infinity and Beyond” has been uttered by millions of children across the world.
Tim Allen had conquered his demons and made a life for himself that defines what The American Dream means. You can make mistakes, earn redemption and make any life you want, as long as you believe in yourself and are willing to work.
Tim Allen continues to work, on his career, on his family and on himself. He stands as a lesson and an inspiration for what any of us can do if we choose to. Join him at the Venetian Showroom when he returns to stand up comedy where it all began.
