For more than 20 years the organizers of Northern Nevada's mega event Burning Man have been building a temporary counter culture village in the desert. Music, art, speakers, merchants and odd things beyond description dominate this annual event that has grown to be the defining counter culture statement.
Now, as reported by The Las Vegas Review Journal in a recent article, Burning Man is coming to Sin City. Put together by the folks behind First Fridays, the Las Vegas version will be limited to a single day and begins with the ceremonial burning of the 20 foot tall Lucky Lady Lucy statue. This same ritual opens the week long version that takes place in the Black Rock Desert 120 miles north of Reno.
The organizers hope that this Las Vegas event, held March 2nd in Las Vegas' Downtown Arts District, will become a annual event that celebrates the six month midpoint between Burning Mans. The success of the Las Vegas event is up in the air, but at the very least it will bring another much needed counter culture influence to a city often too caught up in itself to open its eyes to other ways of living, celebrating and enjoying life.
