Over the past several decades numerous groups have attempted to bring professional sports to Las Vegas. While we have the Las Vegas 51s and the Las Vegas Wranglers have had some success, what locals would truly love to see is a major sports franchise from a major league. The NFL seems more distant than an extra-solar planet and the MLB would run into brutal summer temperatures. The NBA remains a possibility considering the Malouf's ownership of the Kings and their dissatisfaction with Sacramento and the NHL could avoid contraction by moving an under performing team to Vegas.
Despite the ever present obstacle presented by legalized gambling and opposition from entrenched interests, it seems that once again a major sports complex is being considered. The Las Vegas Sun reports that a group led by Christopher Milam is meeting with city officials in Henderson to discuss plans to build a $2 billion dollar multi-sports complex near the M Resort.
While the timetable and details are unclear this developers claim the project would create 10,000 construction jobs and 4,000 permanent service and management jobs. For those of us anxious to see Las Vegas truly enter the professional sports world this is a slight step in the right direction.
